The relationship between mother and child is like no other. Unfortunately as children we usually take our mothers for granted. She could be the most amazing mom in the world yet we have this block that doesn’t really let us appreciate all a mom does and the importance of her role in our lives. I know this for a fact because growing up I defiantly did not appreciate my mom and all that she did for my brother and me.
When I was a teenager I didn’t understand why my mom (or the rest of the world for that matter) didn’t get me, and on more then one occasion I made her life miserable. But as the years passed and my teenage hormones subsided I began to realize just how great my mom is and she became my greatest confidant.
There is no better way to truly appreciate your mom then by having a child of your own. Once I had my own children and experienced the sacrifice and hard work of being a mom I realized just how hard it must have been for MY mom. All those hours worrying and thinking of how to only do the best and be the best mom, usually go unnoticed.
There is one day a year that is dedicated just for moms. If you ask me this is one of the most important days of the year. Because a mom’s sacrifice and love goes unnoticed more often then not, and this is the day we can really take the time to appreciate one of the most important people in our lives. The person that shaped us, carried us and made us great.
This brings me to the point of what I think mothers really want for Mothers Day: appreciation. Motherhood is a very selfless job; you mostly do things for others, especially your kids. But the thought of your kids appreciating all your hard work, is priceless and precious to any mom. Appreciation can come in so many shapes and forms and dollar value has nothing to do with it but if you’re still stumped for ideas, here are a few:
- One of the best ways is to simply tell her with words.
- If you aren’t so great with expressing your emotions verbally, write how you feel on a card (read this article for wording ideas for a Mother’s Day card).
- An original bouquet of Flowers
- Host a mothers day brunch
- Take your mom out to lunch just the two of you
- Go to the spa together
- Do an activity you both love together (pottery, cooking, shopping J)
- A photo album of the two of you together from childhood to now
- Take a memorable trip together
- Personalize a piece of jewelry
No matter what you end up doing for mother’s day remember that mothers, above all want to feel appreciated. It is the one day a year you can shower your mom with love and make her feel special. So let it be a beautiful card or a big trip make her feel as special as she truly is!
